Chemistry and Chemical Engineering - What is the Difference?
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering - What is the Difference? Before attempting to understand what difference there is between chemistry and chemical engineering, one must understand that chemistry is a branch of science concerned with the chemical and physical properties of substances. Chemical engineering is the branch of science concerned with the utilization of materials to create useful products and processes. For example, if a chemical engineer were required to make a formula for an ideal sugar-based fuel, he would need to use chemistry in order to design a chemical reaction that would react to the fuel. A chemical engineer is also required to use chemistry to create new products from raw materials, by combining and mixing elements, or by constructing products from their raw materials.A number of different types of materials exist within the world today; they are all made of one or more elements. In the above examples, chemical engineering could create many useful products from th e materials available, from gas to plastic, from natural gas to plastic bottles. There are several other differences between chemistry and chemical engineering that are very significant. In one example, chemical engineers make substances that can be used to create a product that has already been created by another chemical engineer, a substance which has been approved and added to the market to meet demands of its buyers.Whereas scientific chemistry concentrates on the properties of certain substances as they occur naturally, chemical engineering concentrates on their manufacture into products for sale. Some of the compounds created by chemical engineers are used in products within the industry, as well as in medicine and other areas of science. Some scientists and engineers think that this difference between chemistry and chemical engineering could lead to different roles in society. The chemist is a very important part of society; a chemical engineer is not. With the advances in scie nce and technology over the last few years, it has become much easier to perform scientific and engineering research and develop better products in the industry. Hopefully, this will lead to a future where people are able to create better products by using these advancements in science and engineering.
